Football, baseball and swimming featured some of the biggest sports stories of the year in Greenwich.
The most-read sports story of the year at The Greenwich Daily Voice was that of 8-year-old swimmer Meaghan Lynch. The Greenwich resident broke three county swimming records in her age division, nabbing attention locally while the professionals were swimming in London.
The Greenwich High varsity football team fell to rival Staples of Westport in the conference championship for the second year in a row. The Cardinals clinched their first state playoff berth since 2007 but fell in the opening round to eventual champion Xavier of Middletown.
The Greenwich High girls lacrosse team won its second straight state championship. The Cardinals nipped Cheshire to secure back-to-back Class L titles.
Greenwich golfer Danny Balin, a teaching professional at Burning Tree Country Club, put together one of the best summers of his career. Balin was named Player of the Year by the Metropolitan Professional Golf Association, racking up more than $100,000 in winnings. He also qualified for the PGA Championship for the third year in a row.
In baseball, Greenwich High School became the first team in 16 years to author a perfect 20-0 regular season in May. A few weeks later, Brian Schutzman of Brunswick School threw a no-hitter for the Greenwich Legion team.
