Three Charged In Attack On Teen That Led To Metro-North Delays

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Three teenagers were charged Thursday after a 15-year-old boy from Mamaroneck was attacked, beaten and robbed near the Mamaroneck train station during the evening rush hour Wednesday.

A gang of about 15 teenagers were involved in the assault on the boy before stealing his cellphone, according to police.

When police responded to the report of the attack, the suspects fled in every direction — including onto the northbound tracks of Metro-North's New Haven Line, police have said.

That led Metro-North to shut off power and halt service for a while. In turn, that caused delays of up to 50 minutes for many hours during the rush-hour and into the night for trains heading into and out of Connecticut.

"We needed to de-energize the tracks between Mamaroneck and Harrison. This caused delays as it was peak PM rush," said Meredith Daniels, a spokeswoman for Metro-North railroad.

The three suspects, all charged with second-degree robbery, are from New Rochelle and are ages 14, 16 and 17. Their names were not released by police.

Late Wednesday, Sgt. Sandra DiRuzza, a spokeswoman with the Village of Mamaroneck Police Department, said police have several suspects in New Rochelle and that charges were pending.

DiRuzza said police received a 911 call at about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday about the assault.

Mamaroneck police officers responded to the upper ramp of the Mamaroneck Train Station on the southbound side.

Officers determined the assault had occurred on Andrew Street in the Village of Mamaroneck. As a police officer was speaking with the victim's mother, the officer saw several possible suspects fleeing in multiple directions--some via the northbound train tracks.

Metro-North was notified to temporarily suspend train service.

Town of Mamaroneck Police came to the scene to assist in a canvass of the area. Westchester County Aviation Unit also responded to help in an aerial search.

A preliminary police investigation determined that the 15-year-old male victim from Mamaroneck Village was walking on Andrew Street when he was approached by a large group of about 15 teenagers who were unknown to him, police said. According to the police, the group surrounded the victim and began assaulting him, and then took his cellphone and fled. The teen sustained minor injuries, police said.

Daniels said, "We were assisting Mamaroneck PD. They were pursuing a number of people who wound up on our tracks near Mamaroneck station."

Some train delays continued until about 10 p.m. on the New Haven train lines, officials said.
