GREENWICH, Conn. -- A 72-year-old woman fell victim to an ongoing scam in which elderly people are convinced that a grandchild is being held in custody in a foreign country and needs money, Greenwich Police said.

The woman sent $3,000 to the scammers, who had created a scenario in which a phony "grandson" called and convinced the victim that he needed money to be sent in order to bail him out of a jail in a foreign country, police said.

The scam was reported Friday.
