Christopher Matthews, 36, and John Matthews, 33, both of Bridgeport, were arrested on Friday on drug-related charges after they were lured into town for a drug sale, said Trumbull Police Capt. Keith Golding.
Trumbull detectives, posing as a potential buyer, arranged to come to a predetermined location where they were to purchase drugs. At around 6 p.m. the brothers arrived driving a 2018 BMW, said Golding.
As Trumbull officers began to close in on the vehicle, John Matthews, who was driving at the time, attempted to escape by accelerating in reverse, crashing into a Trumbull Police K9 vehicle, disabling both, he added.
The brothers, who were immediately taken into custody, complained of minor injuries from the crash and were taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital, where they were examined and released a short time later.
The officer who was driving the K9 vehicle was also taken to St. Vincent’s for minor injuries.
A search of the BMW turned up 247 packets of suspected heroin, six cell phones, and almost $2,000 in cash.
"The brothers are believed to be connected to a drug overdose death that occurred in Trumbull earlier on Friday," Golding said. "That investigation is continuing and additional charges are expected."
Both were charged with possession of narcotics with intent to sell. John Matthews was also charged with assault on a police officer for the intentional vehicle crash.
Christopher Matthews was held on $100,00 bond and John Matthews was held on $250,000 bond.
Both are scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 9.
