NEW CANAAN, Conn. — Fran Schneidau, who was the Connecticut bureau chief for WCBS-AM 880 radio for decades, died Tuesday night at the age of 79.

The death of Schneidau, who lived in New Canaan, was announced on social media by WCBS.

Schneidau reported on stories from Connecticut for the all-news AM radio station in New York City. She got her start in radio at WICC-AM in Bridgeport after first working as a stockbroker, the station said

She joined WCBS in 1978 and then retired in February.

“For nearly 40 years, Fran’s voice was heard delivering news from the State of Connecticut to millions of radio listeners throughout the greater New York City metropolitan area, and she did it with class, reputability, and her own trusted style," Gov. Dannel Malloy said in a statement.

"She dedicated her profession to journalism and was respected by so many – including numerous young and upcoming reporters who consistently cite her as an inspiration. We will miss Fran, and we extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues at WCBS.”

In February, Malloy proclaimed “Fran Schneidau Day” in the state of Connecticut to commemorate her retirement.

When she retired, Schneidau gave an interview to her home station of WCBS-AM, talking about how she got her start and how she felt about stepping down.

“I’m going to miss this terribly, believe me, I love this job that I’ve had for 39 years. It’s tough, but you have to make a decision. You can’t go on being kind of off-beat; you’ve just got to give somebody else a chance and it’s time for me to step aside,” she told WCBS-AM.
