James W. Cassidy, 85, Of Greenwich, Retired Toll Collector

GREENWICH, Conn. - James W. Cassidy of Greenwich died Sunday, June 30. He was 85.

Cassidy was born to James P. Cassidy and Josephine Anna (Major). He graduated from Greenwich High School and the McGowan School of Umpiring in 1949. He was a professional umpire for the Blue Grass League in Virginia. He worked for the Life Savers in Port Chester before becoming a Greenwich Toll Collector. He retired after 28 years of service. He was president of the Harry S. Truman Chapter of the American Political Items Collectors (APIC) for 26 years along with editor of their newspaper, the Buckstopper. A portion of his political collection resides at the CT and NY Historical Societies. He was a member of the Glenville Seniors, AARP and Byram Seniors.

Cassidy is survived by his wife, Lucy (Bellantoni) Cassidy; son, Dennis Cassidy (Nellie); daughters, Kathleen Wiegand (Peter), and Ellen Gramlich (Allen); eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and sister, Marion Tyno. He was predeceased by his parents; and brothers, Francis M. Cassidy and William J. Cassidy.

Calling hours are Friday, July 5 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Tutera Funeral Home in Port Chester. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, July 6 at Sacred Heart Church in Byram at 9:30 a.m. Interment will immediately follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Greenwich.
