Greenwich's Edward H. Hildebrand, 89, Innovator In Twinkie Baking

GREENWICH, Conn. - Edward H. Hildebrand Jr., of Nashville Tenn. and formerly of Greenwich, died July 5. He was 89.

Hildebrand was born April 11, 1924, in Brooklyn, N.Y. After graduating from high school, he joined the Navy and sailed many convoy missions to England.

After the war ended, the Navy placed him at Vanderbilt University, an odd location for a New Yorker in 1945. He studied engineering and went on to a successful career as a leading baking engineer first for Continental Baking and later for Arnold Bakeries. He invented the equipment that injected the cream filling into the ever-popular Hostess Twinkie.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Nashville.

Hildebrand is survived by his wife, Mary Margaret Freeman; children, Henry E. Hildebrand (Mary), Susan Ruegger (Arthur) and Elizabeth Graber (John); and four grandchildren.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
