The Stamford community is mourning the loss of 23-year-old Tamarie Sterling, who died earlier this month after battling a rare type of liver cancer.

He is remembered as being an inspirational leader and passionate lacrosse player with a positive mindset.

In a beautifully written obituary , Sterling's family said he would want them not to cry because it's over, but rejoice because his struggle is over.

"Love everyone around you, cherish those you value, and leave no room for hatred, anger or animosity," they said.

More than $7,600 had been raised as of Wednesday, April 18 on a GoFundMe for Sterling.

Born in Jamaica, Sterling moved to Stamford when he was 7 years old. He developed his passion for lacrosse, earning the nickname "Lax Monster" and a reputation of being "crispy with the rock," his obituary says.

Sterling went on to play lacrosse at Greensboro College, where he graduated with a degree in 2017.

The athlete would often return to Stamford during his college breaks, to mentor and assist new lacrosse players and to remind others they were capable of accomplishing great things.

In January of 2017, Sterling was diagnosed with cancer.

"In true Tamarie fashion, he stood strong, kept his head up, often denying the effects as to not worry others on how he was truly feeling," his obituary says.

"Tamarie was committed to stay positive and displayed amazing strength in dealing with this disease."

Visitation is Thursday, April 19 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home in Stamford.

A funeral service is scheduled for Friday, April 20 beginning at 10 a.m., at the Stamford Church of Christ.
