'American Housewife' Backs Down: 'We've Heard The Concerns Of Norwalk'

NORWALK, Conn. -- Norwalk resident Andy Ross has gotten his wish: "American Housewife" will no longer be dissing Norwalk.

In a statement released late Tuesday, Nov. 28, the producers of the ABC show said: “As a comedy, ‘American Housewife’ isn’t intended to offend anyone.

"We’ve heard the concerns of the people of Norwalk and have made the decision to omit any mentions of the city from future episodes.”

Ross, a retired banker whose daughter graduated from the Norwalk school system, started a petition to ask the producers to stop insulting his hometown.

He also contacted Norwalk’s Mayor’s Office and the Board of Education, all of which drew media attention -- and added pressure on the network.

Ross, who was always hopeful the matter would be resolved, told Daily Voice he was beyond pleased.

"I feel great about the [ABC] decision," he said. "It was the wrong thing to do to begin with but they did the right thing to correct it. I appreciate it and particularly appreciate the support from the administration, the mayor's office, the school system and, of course, the Norwalkers who signed the petition and sent me many emails of support." (In the end, he collected 547 signatures.)

Ross said he had a bet with a friend that ABC would eventually see things his way. "I figured why not? It doesn't hurt them to stop but it hurts them more not to stop," he said.

"It's sort of David versus Goliath. You think a thing is so big you can't go up against it. But when something is wrong, people have to stand up and make some noise."

"American Housewife," a sitcom set in Westport, often made fun of neighboring Norwalk and its residents.
