These Fairfield County Pizzas Make 'Best In America' Rankings

It might seem like an impossible task considering how passionate people are about their pizza of choice.

Colony Grill is all about thin-crust pizza.

But one website, The Daily Meal,  does it year after year, listing the Top 101 pizzas in the country by sampling pies from every region and of every type.

This year, Fairfield County made the list with two pizza restaurants making the grade.

Coming in at No. 26 - The Hot Oil Bar Pie, Colony Grill, with locations in Stamford, Norwalk, and Fairfield, as well as Milford.

What drew the eye, or should I say mouth, to the Colony Grill is the Hot Oil Bar Pie, thin and crispy, with sausage and chile-pepper-infused oil.

The Daily Meal, says what makes this pie so great is the hot oil, and that if you aren't going to go for the oil, "don't bother going. They loved the equal amount of ingredients with the cheese filling every nook and cranny.

If thin and crispy is not your thing, then try No. 80 on the list - Blue Skies, Coalhouse Pizza in Stamford - if you're not already a regular.

Known for its coal-fire pizza with some 30 standard pies made with freshly made mozzarella and the special Captuo "00" flour. The taster said that although the restaurant offers everything you could ever want as a topping, they recommend the Blue Skies, listed right at the top of the menu.

The Blue Skies is a simple pizza with rich tomato sauce, mozzarella, aged Parmesan and basil. Tasty and to the point. No fuss. Just yummy eats.

But if you want to venture out of Fairfield County, several other state pizza parlors made the grade, especially in New Haven where six restaurants came in at the top of the heap.

The other winners in Connecticut included:

  • No. 1 - White Clam, Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana (New Haven)
  • No. 12 - Tomato Pie, Sally's Apizza (New Haven)
  • No. 13 - The Italian Bomb, Modern Apizza (New Haven)
  • No. 57 - Plain Pie, Ernie's Pizzeria (New Haven)
  • No. 58 - Special, Zuppardi's (West Haven)
  • No. 64 - Plain Pie, Roseland Apizza (Derby)
  • No. 66 - Mashed Potato and Bacon, BAR (New Haven)
