Greenwich Hospital Medical Oncologist Discusses Cancer Treatment Options

GREENWICH, Conn. -- Dr. Daniel Petrylak, a medical oncologist at Greenwich Hospital, was featured on Tony Savino's "Spotlight on Medicine" on WCGH-AM radio and discussed cancer treatment options for prostate, bladder, kidney and testicular cancers on a recent episode.

Petrylak initially worked with Yale-New Haven Hospital and is now affiliated with Greenwich Hospital. He treats prostate, bladder, kidney and testicular cancers.

According to Petrylak, testicular cancer is most treatable and it is a model for how doctors would like to treat all cancers. Most patients with testicular cancer are responsive to chemotherapy, and 80 percent to 90 percent can be cured.

Several new options for treatment include radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy and immune therapy, he said. Most of these therapies include a higher chance of survival.

Immune therapy improves survival in most advanced forms of prostate cancers and is given in two doses, Petrylak said.

Hormone therapy allows new drugs to help block pathway to stop the creation of more testosterone to feed its growth.

Chemotherapy is used in patients, has side effects and has a different effect on everyone.

"Prostate cancer chemotherapy is emerging up until 2004, we didn't have a chemotherapeutic medicine to improve survival," said Petrylak. "We are learning how to integrate surgery, hormonal therapy and radiation therapy."
