Snow & Sleet Giving Way To Blustery Winds In Greenwich

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — The weather forecast is not getting any better for Fairfield County. The snow and sleet from Sunday afternoon is transitioning into freezing rain for the evening and will give way to powerful winds by early Monday morning, the National Weather Service said.

Some roads and highways across Fairfield County were icing up Sunday night, causing slippery and hazardous conditions, after a storm dumped snow and sleet on the state throughout much of the day, the weather service said.

The weather service warned of dangerous driving conditions overnight and into Monday morning as a light freezing drizzle continued to fall.

The coastal region was already coated with 1 to 3 inches of snow and sleet and up to a tenth of an inch of ice, and the interior portion of Fairfield County had 2 to 5 inches of new snow with up to a tenth of an inch of ice.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation said it had 634 plow trucks clearing the roads Sunday. State troopers responded to 107 accidents, including six with injuries, along with 134 driver assists and 636 calls for service. This snow and ice came on the heels of a storm Thursday, the worst of the season, that dropped up to a foot of snow on Fairfield County.

There is also a Wind Advisory for 2 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, with northwest winds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts of up to 50 mph in the forecast. The  strongest winds will be from sunrise until late afternoon.

The winds may be strong enough to blow down tree limbs and power lines. Residents should be prepared for isolated power outages.

Travel will be difficult at times with the high winds, especially for large vehicles and while crossing elevated bridges. Drivers are urged to use caution.

Monday will be partly sunny, with a high near 34 but strong winds making it feel closer to 20 degrees. Temps will drop Monday night to around 20 degrees with wind chills between 10 and 15. Tuesday will be mostly sunny, with a high near 35.

Also Sunday night, State Police said there would be an extended closure of I-84 in both directions at Exit 67 in Tolland in upstate Connecticut. At 6:55 p.m. Sunday, troopers from Troop C in Tolland responded to a tractor-trailer rollover on I-84 eastbound near Exit 67. No injuries were reported.

But the tractor-trailer was carrying hazardous materials, and an extended highway closure is expected as crews work to remove the truck and its contents. Motorists were urged to avoid the area.
