Mallozzi ran his campaign on a platform that only benefits the retirees and employees of our town, and he is making good on that. Everyone should remember why people move here: OUR SCHOOLS. And the quality of our schools is what keep our real estate prices where they are....I sat this, not because my investment in my home is priority #1, but rather, to appeal to the people who think this paltry budget is enough to sustain our schools.
When the board approves a 2.3% salary increase for teachers, I expect the proposed budget reflect the decisions they made in the last contract negotiation. But the board of finance is not: the shortfall in the proposed budget will truly affect the quality of education our children receive. As the cost of energy and insurance continues to rise, programs and Capitol projects are falling by the wayside. Couple the board of finance's proposal with Malloy's ZERO budget increase for new Canaan schools, and you have a recipe for failure.
The number one component which sustains the quality of our town is being allowed to literally crumble (south school windows and cinder blocks) .....but hey, fancy new town hall!? Awesome, because that's why people move here, right? Yay, town hall.

Gov Malloy has granted increases of 30% over the next two years for Bridgeport Norwalk and Stamford schools while new Canaan schools will receive ZERO increase (all the whole energy and medical benefit costs are going up). Time and time again it has been proven that spending more money per child does not beget better schools. Malloy's decision to redistribute my tax dollars is reason alone not to vote for him again ....his choice to give these increases without overhauling the school systems is a total waste of money.
While I am sure your children are getting a top notch education. You don't know what you are missing until you have experienced the other schools and this cannot compare properly.
I, too, despise these reports. While my family would be considered extremely wealthy by any standard, the cost if living is so high here we sometimes feel as though we can't make ends meet. I take no joy in living I. The wealthiest area of the country, I only do so for my children. View Comment
It's not the idiot in Hartford ....sadly you have to speak to the lowest denomination of brain matter sometimes. People are generally stupid. Someone rammed a power pole here and left 280 homes without power. Kinda selfish...... Who cares if they issued a statement. It takes five mins and move on..... View Comment
The tax on my 1973 classic car was $11. Such a silly tax. I have actually scaled back on expensive cars. I would love to not pay tax on my cars. View Comment
According to zillow our value has gone up in recent months. And with the buyers? I guess i have to over price my house $100000 since my bathrooms aren't updated so when they deduct for what they seem as necessary, u actually get the value of my home *sigh* View Comment
1. Please don't bring a woman's right to choose into this debate.
2. Don't assume I belong to the left. I am a registered republican
3. Here we go with the blaming Hollywood , video games. Etc. make sure you have your facts because the NRA, who publically spoke about blaming, in part, video games, just released an App where the player gets to shoot shoot shoot...... And The Netherlands, who consumer 20 times the violent video games than the US, had less than 10 gun deaths. So keep fooling yourself about that argument!
I bring up Jon Stewart because his video intelligentally summed up my feelings on this issue. The problem with people like you? Not willing to open your ears to BOTH sides of the argument and ever admit that, perhaps, you could be wrong. I suggest you google the videos to which I am referring, and listen with an open mind, you might learn something. Really. You might :) View Comment
Bravo to Kara for her efforts and not
Just giving lip service. We own several legal guns in our house, I am not anti-gun, but I so support the ban on so-called assault rifles and the distribution of high capacity magazines. And closing the many loopholes that exist in our laws.
I wish the gun zealots would realize noone is trying to take away their precious second ammendment rights. There isn't a "right" out there that doesn't have regulation. Freedom of speech!? You are not allowed to incite violence or threaten the president ..... Why do gun zealots think that the second ammendment should be any different? Yes, collectively there are 7.000 laws regulating guns, but that doesn't mean there shouldn't be 7,010. As our society evolves, so should our laws.
Lastly, google Jon Stewart's two part commentary on this issue. He sums it up more brilliantly than anyone I have heard. View Comment
The article states that this year's vaccine was specific to H1N1 so how is that two of my three children tested positive for the h1n1 flu 9 weeks after vaccination !?
And yes, never put your hands above your shoulders is always a good rule to stay healthy. View Comment
I was diagnosed with H1N1 the week before Christmas. My children, all three of them, also contracted the flu. While I got my shot too late (5 days before I was sick, I suspect I was exposed to the virus at the doctors office), my children were immunized in October. There was plenty of time or the vaccine to do what it was supposed to do.
I have always gotten flu shots for me and my family, and when people say they contracted flu regardless, I always figured they didn't get the immunization on a timely basis. My friend, a doctor, has always advised against the shot, saying that there is too many strains for the pharmaceutical company to know which shot to make, etc. and I always ignored him bc he was bein cynical about them wanting to make profit.
Well you know what? This is the last time I will ever get a flu shot. Knowing that my children contracted h1n1 after bein immunized for the very thing 9 weeks prior tells me that my doctor friend was correct. And this vaccine supposedly was for h1n1 in addition to other flu strains, as the article indicates.
I am not writing this to debate vaccinations but just to share my story. Information is power. View Comment
The fact that we allow tackle football at this age is completely irresponsible. How much more research needs to be done on concussions and children before parents listen? Such a shame. Congrats to the team.

Mark DeWaele should "glean" more information when dealing with tax payers money. AS should all the council members. This vote is a serious embarrassment and an egregious misuse of money and power. I really wonder why a first selectman thinks he's deserving of pension after serving such a short time, or any politician for that matter. Serving a paid elected position for four years should never qualify for pension....... don't we reserve that for long term employees, like police? I don't really think the people of New Canaan are paying attention to this. I hope the people of our town speak loudly at the next election that this behavior is offensive and intolerable. Can you at least confirm the address? Did this happen at 200 park street? Kind of looks like it from the pictures. I have friends that live there. View Comment
