I asked Steve Walker, President of ProGreen, the manufacturer I use, to respond to your concerns. Here's his response and my final word on the subject of lead content of synthetic turf products.
Hi Ken,
Sure I'd love to comment. First of all, synthetic turf is mostly all made from virgin plastic. There is some now available that's recyclable, but about 95% is virgin. Some of the backings we offer are made from post consumer goods like plastic bottles though.
Back in 2008, all synthetic turf resin had some heavy metals such as lead. Since then, most all manufacturing plants in the U.S. changed the resin which resulted in lead levels that are undetectable. All ProGreen Turf falls in this catagory.
But that's not to say that there isn't a lot of turf sold in the U.S. that does contain high lead levels. Almost all turf imported from China still has potential lead issues which is troubling. That's why its so important to buy turf manufactured in the U.S. where the standards are so much higher.
Rest assured that ProGreen has the most stringent oversight of all its products.

Synthetic grass is made from recycled plastic and contains NO lead. For more information about the benefits and ecology behind these products, go to www.ProGreen.com. I know you'll be impressed, as I was before deciding to use it. View Comment
