Winning Streak Ends For Greenwich Girls Volleyball

GREENWICH, Conn. – The Greenwich High School varsity girls volleyball team saw its first loss of the season Friday when it was swept 3-0 by Darien (26-24, 25-21, 25-17). The loss takes Greenwich to 8-1 for the season.

Ebba Mark had 10 kills, two aces and 11 digs for Greenwich. Jennie Cespedes had 12 service points and five aces. Liza Johnson had 10 kills, and Xanthi Katsigiannis had 13 assists.

The first game went down to the wire. With the game tied at 20, Darien scored four points, only to be matched by Greenwich for each one to tie the game at 24. Riley Sousa then scored twice in a row for Darien to win it, 26-24.

Greenwich had a brief lead in the second game before Darien pulled ahead for good. Darien held a seven-point lead at one point before Greenwich started to close the gap. The Cardinals came within one point to make it 18-17, but the Blue Wave surged, winning 25-21.

The third game remained close until the end. With Darien leading 8-4, Greenwich tied it up. The teams remained within a point of each other for much of the rest of the game, until it stood at 18-16 in favor of Darien. The Blue Wave then went on a tear, scoring five points in a row. Greenwich scored one before Darien put it away, 25-17.

“Their skill level was a little higher today. They had a higher consistency of attack and a great defense,” Greenwich coach Steve Lapham said. “We had our chances, but they kept us in the backcourt with constant pressure. Their center did a great job.”

Greenwich will next play Trinity Catholic High School at home at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
