The Westchester Express Mites tied the New Jersey Junior Devils in the preliminary round of the 15th annual Ed Lynch Memorial Shamrock Ice Hockey Tournament, earning a berth in the final.
For Westchester to win the tournament, it had to beat the Junior Devils in the championship game. And that is what it did, scoring a 3-0 victory.
"It was a perfect way for these boys to end the season and their mite careers as they all move to the squirt level next year," coach Walter Tumm said.
The Express went 3-0-1 in the tournament to take the title, also beating the New Jersey Colonels and Suffolk PAL AAA.
"We ask a lot of these young boys," coach Bob Bongo said. "It's a lot of hard work, and they respond, each and every one of them. I am really proud of all the hard work they put in."
The team finished with 30 wins and won a second tournament, team manager and parent Joe Palombo said. It began the year with eight new players, who quickly came together and made the Express an excellent team.
