Rocky Point swim coach Terry Lowe remembers that his team lost the Division I championship meet last year only to come back and win the county championship a few days later. But he doesn't expect the same thing to occur this year.
Roxbury Swim Club won Tuesday's Division I meet at Long Ridge Club in Stamford with 1,121 points. Rocky Point took second with 1,031, and Long Ridge of Stamford grabbed third with 855.5. The top 16 swimmers in each race from five divisions qualify for Saturday's county championship meet, which will be held at Roxbury.
"At this point, we're a better divisional team than we are a county team,'' Lowe said. "Last year we had some swimmers who were among the older kids in their age group. This year we're a little bit younger. If we hold on to second in the county meet I'll be pleased."
Lowe said Rocky Point swimmers earned a lot of points in Tuesday's race with depth. Many of those swimmers, however, will not qualify for Saturday's championships. Still, he was pleased with his team's performance.
"We had a lot of swimmers that had individual bests and our relays looked pretty strong,'' Lowe said. "I don't think we had a single disappointing event."
Some of Rocky Point's top swimmers included Alex Walsh in the 8-and-under with victories in the 25-meter butterfly, 25-meter backstroke and 25-meter breaststroke; Jaimie Miller in 14-and-under backstroke and individual medley; and Andrew Berzolla in 8-and-under 25-meter freestyle.
