GREENWICH, Conn. The Greenwich 12-year-old Cal Ripken All-Stars are alive and well, thanks in large part to the bat of Marco Pastore. The Greenwich first baseman cranked a grand slam in the second inning of Wednesday evening's district tournament. Pastore's homer was the difference as Greenwich eked out a 7-6 victory and put Norwalk's championship hopes on hold.
Defending District 1 champion Norwalk had breezed through its first two games of the double-elimination tournament, including handing Greenwich a 5-3 loss. Norwalk tried to mount a comeback in the third, scoring three times, including the second home run of the night by Mike Gonzalez.
Connor Langan shut the door on Norwalk though, pitching three-and-a-third scoreless innings of relief. Langan was perfect in the final two innings.
After the teams traded a pair of runs in the first inning, Joey Lanni continued his torrid pace out of the nine-spot of the lineup, doubling in the go-ahead run. Norwalk right-hander Nico Petridis walked the next two batters, setting up Pastore's eventual game-winning slam.
The two teams square off again in a winner-take-all district tournament final on Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Saxe Middle School in New Canaan.
