The One Run was conceived by three British runners who wanted to show support for the city of Boston after terrorist bombings killed three people and injured hundreds more April 15 at the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Each runner makes a contribution to The One Fund Boston via their entry fee when they sign up to run. Money raised through this fund is being used to help the people most affected by the tragic events in Boston.
As of Thursday, the relay had raised just less than $69,000.
“One Run For Boston is a chance for runners to come together and show solidarity in a really dynamic way,” race organizer Kate Treleaven said in a statement. “It’s a chance to be part of something remarkable, to demonstrate the strength of human spirit and send a powerful message of support to the city of Boston and those whose lives were changed on April 15.”
The relay began in Los Angeles on June 7 and has continued 3,300 miles in 319 stages across the country. The relay has traveled through California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. Runners will be in Pennsylvania and New Jersey and Friday and are headed for New York, Connecticut and finally, Massachusetts.The final four stages will take place along the same route as the Boston Marathon in Massachusetts.
Stages 296, 297, 298 and 299 of the 319-stage race will make their way along Route 1 from Greenwich to Bridgeport.
Michael Grant will begin the Connecticut stage of the relay, entering Greenwich from New York state. Grant will hand off the baton to Molly Barrett at about 1:15 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Putnam Avenue and Greenwich Avenue in Greenwich.
Barrett will then give way to Melissa Southwell at the intersection of the Post Road and Sedgewick Avenue in Darien at about 2:50 p.m. The final stage of the relay in Fairfield County will be run by Janine from the Westport Country Playhouse at about 4:05 p.m. to Baldwin Plaza in Bridgeport.
