New Canaan Ranked No. 1 In MaxPreps Football Poll

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- New Canaan grabbed the No. 1 ranking in the state from MaxPreps after the opening weekend of the high school football season in Connecticut.

Fairfield Prep (No. 4) and Darien (No. 6) were also ranked in the Top 10 by MaxPreps among state teams.

The Rams beat Hand of Madison, 21-14, in their season-opening game on Friday. The Rams led 12-0 after one quarter, but Hand rallied for 14-12 halftime lead. The Rams scored nine unanswered points in the second half, and the defense blanked Hand.

Quarterback Mike Collins threw for 265 yards and three touchdowns while junior running back Mike Cognetta rushed for 101 yards to lead New Canaan, which is ranked 25th in MaxPreps' regional poll.

Fairfield Prep beat Stamford, 59-40, as quarterback Colton Smith rushed for 164 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw 168 yards and three touchdowns.

Darien beat HIllhouse, 47-25, as junior quarterback Tim Graham threw for 204 yards and three touchdowns. Junior running back Shelby Grant added 73 yards, while Peter Archey rushed for two touchdowns.

Darien plays at Greenwich at 7 p.m. Friday, and Prep meets St. Joseph of Trumbull on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Trumbull. New Canaan hosts Bassick on Friday at 7 p.m.
