Middle School Squash Team At Greenwich's Sacred Heart Wins National Title

GREENWICH, Conn. --  Convent of the Sacred Heart's middle school squash team won the 2015 U.S. Middle School national championship last month at Yale University.

The team won their first of four matches against St. Luke’s School of New Canaan, 4-1, followed by a 4-1 win against Shipley of Philadephia. In the semifinals, the team edged East Rock of Connecticut, 3-2.

In a close final match against New Canaan Country School, Convent of the Sacred Heart earned a 3-2 decision.

Under the leadership of coaches Ridgley Biddle, Shahid Khan and Mumtaz Anwar, Sacred Heart won 45 of 68 games. 

At No. 1, Katie Keller was undefeated without dropping a game. Julia Welsh, playing in the No. 5 spot, won 12 games, dropping only one in the four-match tournament.

Seventh-graders who competed in this tournament: Cameron Calcano, Sophia Georgas, Katie Keller, Grace Nemec, Anna Veber and Julia Welsh.
