NEW CANAAN, Conn. It's always nice to get production out of your team's No. 9 hitter. When your ninth hitter carries the whole offense, you're probably having a very good night.
Joey Lanni smacked two opposite-field home runs and drove in a whopping six runs for the Greenwich 12-year-old Cal Ripken team Tuesday evening all out of the nine hole. Lanni's contributions alone were more than enough to carry Greenwich to a 13-4 win over Stratford and into the Ripken District One final against Norwalk.
The tide turned in Greenwich's favor in the fourth inning, escaping a jam. Clinging to a 4-3 lead, Stratford threatened with runners on second and third with one out. Daniel Curley came on in relief for Greenwich and wiggled his way out of the tight spot.
With disaster avoided, Greenwich grabbed a hold of the game. It exploded for five runs in the bottom of the inning, backed by a two-run double by Lanni and a mammoth home run to right field by Marco Pastore.
Greenwich will take on Norwalk in the 12-year-old Cal Ripken District One final Wednesday evening at 5:30 at Saxe Middle School. Norwalk has yet to lose in the double-elimination tournament, so Greenwich will have to defeat them twice to win the title.
