GREENWICH, Conn. Greenwichs L.J. Mazzilli was one of three UConn baseball players named to the preseason All-Big East team by conference coaches on Wednesday. Teammates Tim Martin and Joe Pavone were also preseason All-Big East selections.
Mazzilli, a junior second baseman, hit .338 and had 32 RBIs last year. He also hit 23 doubles on the way to earning second team All-Big East honors. UConn won its first Big East regular season championship last year and went on to play in the NCAA Super Regionals. Mazzilli had 93 hits last year, the second highest total in a single season at UConn.
Matt Iannazzo, a senior pitcher from Norwalk, was also named to the team.
The Huskies were predicted to finish third this year in the Big East. Mazzilli, the son of former Major Leaguer Lee Mazzilli, graduated from IMG Pendleton School in Bradenton, Fla. Last month he was named a first-team preseason All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
The Huskies open their season Feb. 17 in the Big East-Big 10 Challenge in Florida. Stamfords Stanley Paul, a junior, is also a member of the Huskies. Brien McMahon senior Bryan Daniello announced in the fall that he will play baseball at UConn next year.
