The race consisted of a 400-meter swim, 18-mile bike ride and 5K run. Newman ranked first in the swim and run, and second in the bike. Her time of 17:48.3 in the closing 5K, a brisk 5:45 per mile pace, was almost five minutes better than the next fastest split.
Newman, a breast cancer survivor, finished second last year in the Sprint distance for her age group in the World Triathlon Championship in New Zealand.
