Hughes was part of the U.S. crew on the Women’s Four. Hughes joined Carline Hart of Massachusetts, Sylvia Sallquist of Washington and Elize Spilsbury of Massachusetts on the winning team. The girls were coached by Liz Trond of Norwalk-based Connecticut Boat Club. The girls were the only U.S. crew to win a gold medal in the international regatta.
“I’m unbelievably proud,’’ Trond told USRowing. “They raced like we practiced. It’s what we worked for the whole year, starting this time last year. The last one was in Eaton Dorney (England) with three returners in 2010. We’ve never won it with four brand new people.”
The United States also picked up a silver medal in the women’s quad. The crew was coached by Wilton’s Guenter Beutter. “This is the best medal I have ever won,” he said. “It was very hard to get to that medal. The circumstances with how close the whole field was, was just harder than any race I’ve had before.”
Ridgefield’s Meg Galloway and Greenwich’s Melissa Curtis rowed on the Women’s Eight that finished fifth. Redding’s Christina Johnson finished 14th in the Women’s Single Schulls, and Weston’s Jo Gurman finished 13th with her teammate in the Women’s Double Sculls.
