GREENWICH, Conn. – Danny Balin has been close to unstoppable on the golf course in 2012.

The Greenwich resident won his fifth tri-state area championship tournament Thursday, taking the top spot at the Lincoln Met PGA Championship at the Country Club of Fairfield.

Balin, an assistant pro at Burning Tree Country Club, finished the three-round tournament with an eight-under 202, finishing three strokes ahead of Norwalk resident Frank Bensel.

Balin and Bensel were tied at four-under entering the final round of play. Balin was on fire Thursday, however, sinking seven birdies on the day. Balin could not completely pull away, however, shooting a double-bogey on the ninth hole and a bogey on the 12th.

But Balin recovered, sinking key birdies on the 14th and 18th holes to hold off Bensel.

Balin has come away with Metropolitan Professional Golf Association victories in the Met Assistant Championship, the Met Open Championship and the New York State Open Championship.

Earlier this year, Balin qualified for the PGA Championship for the third year in a row.
