Greenwich Y Director Gives Members New Challenge

GREENWICH, Conn. – As the new director of wellness and healthy living at the Greenwich YMCA, Anja Krieger-Redwood is always looking to provide her members and instructors with ways to challenge themselves. So what better way than by joining up with the Connecticut Challenge, a bike ride that raises money for cancer survivorship programs.

The CT Challenge has started to offer YMCAs and health clubs the opportunity to host yoga classes for cancer survivors at their facilities, paid for by a grant from the CT Challenge. To qualify for the grant, the YMCA is putting together a team to ride in and support the July 28 event in Westport.

“I was familiar with the CT Challenge name and thought that this would be a great opportunity for our members and instructors to be involved in a team-oriented event that will drive each person forward, as well as something for the greater good of the community and the cause itself,” said Krieger-Redwood. “This is something you can feel good about and we would love to have it be an annual event, where we can all work for the bigger goal of helping our community through this program with the yoga classes.”

"The CT Challenge established the Yoga For Life community grant program for YMCAs to provide yoga to cancer survivors, a proven health benefit,” said Sharyn Taymor, the Connecticut Challenge’s director of the survivorship network and outreach, who oversees the new program. “Anja and the Greenwich Y jumped right on it. The Greenwich Y team in the CT Challenge means that cancer survivors in their community will have a program designed for their unique needs. It's a perfect synergy between two community minded non-profits and we look forward to supporting the Greenwich Y team for many years."

Krieger-Redwood has a team of five committed right now and is looking to add more riders before the July 28 event. Anyone interested in joining the YMCA team can contact her at (203) 869-1630 ext. 213 or akrieger-redwood@gwymca.org.
