Greenwich Women Help Virginia Crew Win NCAA Title

GREENWICH, Conn. — Two seniors from Greenwich helped the University of Virginia women’s rowing team win the NCAA championship Sunday in West Windsor, N.J.

Hunter Terry and Cristine Candland rowed on the Varsity Four that finished second at the NCAA meet. Virginia won the First Varsity Eight and finished with 87 points, while Michigan was second with 82. California was third with 78.

The Greenwich women are part of a huge Fairfield County contingent on the Virginia roster. Other women from Fairfield County on the roster of the national champions include Wilton’s Molly Frear, Darien’s Emily Pik, Paige Terry of Greenwich, Weston’s Brittany Wengel and Westport’s Lizzy Youngling. Betsy and Mary Nilan, from Milford, are former rowers for Connecticut Boat Club coach Liz Trond. Frear earned honors as a College Rowing Coaches Association scholar athlete.
