With the conference titles settled, spring sports teams from Greenwich High School have their eyes on bigger prizes now. The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference recently released the state tournament brackets for the nine spring sports, and Greenwich is well represented.
The baseball team enters the Class LL state tournament coming off a late-season surge into the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference playoffs. Greenwich fell to top-ranked St. Joseph in the quarterfinals but is confident as the 19th seed. The first two rounds of the Class LL tournament will have a local flavor as Greenwich (11-9) travels to 14th-seed Norwalk (13-7) for a 3:30 p.m. Tuesday game. If Greenwich gets past the Bears, who defeated them twice in the regular season, it will take on another familiar face in either Brien McMahon or Stamford High School.
The softball team turned its season around after a 2-8 start, going 7-3 to finish the season. The Cardinals (9-11) did not qualify for the FCIAC tournament but are entering the Class LL tournament as the 25th seed. They will travel to fifth-ranked Danbury for a 4 p.m. game Tuesday.
The boys lacrosse team could not duplicate its surprise FCIAC championship run of a year ago, falling to Ridgefield. Greenwichs spot in the Division L state tournament was not assured until defeating Stamford, 16-4, in the qualifying round Saturday. Ranked 12th, the Cardinals (11-6) will travel to fifth-seed Glastonbury for a game at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The girls lacrosse team enters the new Division L state tournament as the sixth-seed after falling in the FCIAC quarterfinals. Girls lacrosse expanded from two to three divisions this season. The Cardinals (10-4) will host 11th-seed and FCIAC rival Ridgefield at 5 p.m. Thursday.
The girls tennis team was denied the FCIAC title by New Canaan for the second straight year, falling in the final, 5-2. Greenwich (15-1) suffered its only regular season loss to New Canaan and enters the Class L state tournament as the third seed. It will host the winner of the Shelton vs. Middletown play-in game at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
The boys volleyball team will be the seventh-seed in the Class L tournament and will host 10th-seed Amity at 4 p.m. Tuesday. The girls and boys track teams will be well represented at the Class LL championships to be held at Willowbrook Park in New Britain on Tuesday. The boys tennis and boys and girls golf seedings will be announced later this week.
