Greenwich Rower Helps Conn. Boat Club Win Bronze At U.S. Youth Nationals

NORWALK, Conn., -- Girls from Ridgefield and Darien won a gold medal for Norwalk-based Connecticut Boat Club at the recent USRowing Youth National Championships in Mercer, New Jersey.

The Connecticut Boat Club took third place in the Varsity 8 at the recent USYouth National Championships in New Jersey. Girls from Ridgefield, Darien, Weston and Wilton were on the team.

CBC also won a bronze medal in the Varsity 8 with girls from Ridgefield, Darien, Weston, Wilton and Greenwich.

Kaitlyn Kynast of Ridgefield and Julia Cornacchia of Darien won gold in the Varsity Pair for CBC, which is coached by Liz Trond. 

They were also on the third place Varsity 8 along with Katie Bower of Weston, Taylor Lust of Ridgefield, Irene McLaughlin of Darien, Lauren Squitieri of Wilton, Paige Cleary of Darien, Andy Bernhardt of Ridgefield and Sophie Perez (coxswain) of Greenwich.

Grace Collins of Ridgefield, Kat Kearn of Greenwich, Olivia Luther of Fairfield, Casey Batson of Darien, and Maya Seshan (coxswain) of Wilton competed for CBC in the Varsity 4 at Nationals.

Another highlight of the CBC season included the formation of the Sweitzer Oar at the Kent Invitational Regatta, an award given to the winner of the Girl’s First Varsity Eight race. The award was donated by CBC in honor of coach Jim Sweitzer who is a graduate of the Kent School and has coached rowing at both CBC and Kent School Boat Club. The award recognizes his support, service and dedication to both programs. The CBC First Varsity 8 was honored with being the first time recipients of The Sweitzer Oar award.

CBC is now gearing up for summer rowing camp. There are four, two week sessions (June 20-July1, July 5-15, July 18-29, Aug. 1-12) available for new and experienced rowers. For more information, contact Sue Ferguson at sue@ctboatclub.org. Check out the CBC website for more information.
