GREENWICH, Conn. – Greenwich native Cam Atkinson was called up Friday by the Columbus Blue Jackets and is expected to play in the National Hockey League team’s game at 7 tonight against the Colorado Avalanche.

Atkinson, 22, made his NHL debut with Columbus Oct. 7 against Nashville. He has played in five games and scored his first NHL goal Oct. 10 against Vancouver.

Atkinson’s last game with Columbus was Nov. 5 against Philadelphia. He has played most of the season with the Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey League, where he has scored 29 goals and dished out 15 assists. He is tied for the AHL lead in power play goals with 13 and ranks second in total goals. He was selected to play in the AHL All-Star Classic in January.

Atkinson starred at Boston College, where he scored 31 goals last year and was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, which is awarded to the nation’s top collegiate player. He was the eighth pick of Columbus in the 2008 Entry Draft.

He also earned the Fairfield County Sports Commission’s Sports Person of the Year for Greenwich in 2010.
