Greenwich Marlins Set State Records At YMCA Championships

GREENWICH, Conn. -- The YMCA of Greenwich Marlins swim team broke several state records at the Connecticut State Age Group Championships at Wesleyan University in Middletown.

The meet featured more than 50 teams. And 51 swimmers from the Marlins, ages 9 to 18, competed in the event.

The team made a big splash Thursday evening, with Ailee Mendoza (14) placing first in the 1,650 freestyle event.

The 10 & under swimmers excelled for the Marlins. Alex Ye (10) won the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:05.25 and broke the state record. Ye went on to win four out of six of his individual events. The relay team of Charlotte Gaudet (10), Shannon Gerbert (10), Caterina Li (10), and Emma Marshall (10) took third place in the 400 free relay and fourth place in the 200 medley and 200 free relays.

The boys relay team of Alex Ye (10), Lucas Hodgson (10), Mark Chen (10), and Luke Apostolides (10) placed second in the 400 free relay. The boys 200 free relay team made up of Ye, Hodgson, Apostolides, and James Pascale took second.

The 11-12 year old Marlins had outstanding performances throughout the weekend. The 11-12 boys 200 free relay of Marcus Hogdson (12), Andres Ruh (11), Conway Zhou (11), and Alex Kosyakov (12) broke the Connecticut state and resident record with a time of 1:42.00. The same relay team also set new state and resident records in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:45.34. Conway Zhou went on to place first in the 200 fly with a time of 2:17.45. The relay team of Sophie Moore(12), Ashley Hu (11), Lexi DelaSierra (11), Kortney Knudsen (12), and Paulina Gerner (11) took top six in all four of their relays.

Strong performances from the 13-14 year old girls and boys began on Thursday night when the 800 free relay team of Matthew Li (14), Thacher Scannell (14), Stephan Todorovic (13), and Christian Farricker (13) placed third with a time of 7:59.67. Sophia Jahan (13), Hannah Subramaniam (14), Paula Anne Scanlan (14), and Ailee Mendoza placed second with a time of 7:57.78. Ailee Mendoza also placed first in the 500 free, and was the distance high point winner.

In the 15-18 year old age group, the girls 400 medley relay Team of Quinn Scannell (15), Carolyn Morikawa (15), Diana Tramontano (15), and Malavika Pande (15) broke the state record with a time of 3:57.77. The same relay team placed first in the 200 medley and the 400 free relays, and placed second in the 200 and 800 free relays.  Quinn Scannell placed first in the 100 back with a 56.39, qualifying her for Winter Senior Nationals.

Greenwich resident, Cristi Frias (18), took first in the 100 fly with a time of 56.27. The boys relay team of Luca Dicapua (15), Oscar Ike (16), Alex Jahan (15), and Alex Li (17) placed first in three out of their four relays. Oscar Ike was the 15-18 year old high point winner. Greenwich resident Alex Jahan, won his 100 breast event with a time of 57.23.
