The YMCA of Greenwich Marlins Junior Olympic Diving Team traveled to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., to compete at the 2011 USA Diving Spring Regional Championship. It took second place out of 15 teams from Region 2, which includes New York, Pennsylvania and portions of Connecticut. In addition, the Marlins divers collectively snagged six gold medals, took first place in the women's division and had nine athletes qualify for the East National competition next month.
Six of the Greenwich Marlins brought home gold medals from the regional championship this past weekend. Sean Burston (three meter), Rachel Burston (one meter), Carolina Sculti (three and one meters) and James Hopper (three and one meters) all placed first in their events. All 13 divers on the team medaled in every event in which they participated.
"Every single diver on this team really brought their best to this weekend's tournament," said coach Dylan Korn. "This was the first major competition for a lot of our divers, but they all looked focused and excited and made each dive count. This weekend really has everyone fired up for the next competition."
The next step for the Marlins will be the East Nationals to be held in Knoxville, Tenn., in early April. Sculti, Hopper, Rachel Burston, Sean Burston, Annabelle Pollack, Sydney Shrenker, Elizabeth Uhl, Kirsten Parkinson and Caleigh Kupersmith qualified for East Nationals.
The YMCA of Greenwich Junior Olympic Team offers an advanced level of training with the goal of instructing athletes in a range of dives on the one- and three-meter boards. The team competes at local, regional and national meets and invitational tournaments with the goal of qualifying for Nationals.
