Greenwich defeated Glastonbury in Wednesday's semifinals, 5-4, in overtime, to reach Saturday's championship game. Kristian Cunningham scored the game-winner for Greenwich (22-2-2), pushing home a rebound after the initial shot by Cal McKinney.
The top-seeded Cardinals will play No. 2 Darien in Saturday's championship game at Ingalls Rink at Yale University. Faceoff is at 2 p.m.
While a longtime state contender, the Cardinals only state championship came in 1992 when they defeated Fairfield Prep, 3-2. Greenwich lost in the state championship game in 2002 and 1990.
Greenwich will meet a familiar foe in Darien. The teams fought to a 3-3 tie on Feb. 3 in the regular season. In the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference championship game, the Blue Wave posted a 5-3 victory.
Darien has its own state title hockey drought. The Blue Wave last won the state title in 1969, and lost in the state final last year to Fairfield Prep.
Cunningham had two goals and an assist for Greenwich in the win over Glastonbury. Brian Silard, Mike Mozian and Ian Fulton also scored while goalie Bryan Archino made 28 saves.
Greenwich has defeated South Windsor, Fairfield Prep and Glastonbury in its run to the state championship game. Its only other loss this season was 2-0 setback to Xavier during the regular season.
