Greenwich High Basketball Star Named State's Gatorade Player Of The Year

GREENWICH, Conn. – Greenwich High School’s Alex Wolf was named the Gatorade Player of the Year for boys basketball, it was announced Friday.

Wolf averaged 16.5 points and 13.6 rebounds for the Cardinals, who reached the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference championship game.

The Cardinals’season ended Wednesday with a loss to Fairfield Prep in the Class LL semifinals.

Wolf, who will attend Dartmouth, has a 4.0 GPA. He also is a member of the National Honor Society and has volunteered at the Greenwich Library and as a youth basketball coach.

“Alex Wolf is so important to Greenwich’s success,” said Andrew McClellan, head coach at Ridgefield High in a press release on the Player of the Year website. “He’s got the best motor for a big man. He plays 100 percent all the time and he causes a lot of problems around the rim.”

The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls  soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport.

Kurt Steidl of Ridgefield won the award last year.
