Greenwich Girls Soccer Plays Fairfield Warde To A Draw

GREENWICH, Conn. – There was a lot of anticipation going into Tuesday’s Greenwich-Fairfield Warde rematch between the adversaries of last year's girls soccer conference finals. Greenwich won that contest, but determining the better team this year will have to wait for a possible postseason encounter, as the two teams battled to a 0-0 tie Tuesday.

Backup goalie Kylie Ginsberg, filling in for the injured Maddie Graham, had an impressive day in net, keeping unbeaten Warde off the score sheet. The sophomore came away with eight saves on the day, including three close calls she had to punch over the net.

Warde controlled the ball in the Greenwich end of the field most of the game, but Cardinals head coach Danny Simpson was pleased his defense kept the Mustangs in check.

“As always, this was a very tight contest,” he said. “It was their field and we’re not used to playing on grass, so that was a bit of an advantage for them. To keep their offense quiet like we did is phenomenal.”

Greenwich could not get much going on its offensive front on the afternoon. The Cardinals could only muster three shots on goal.

“I think our defense did really well. We adjusted to the elements of a grass field,” Graham said. “It would have been nice for a win again, but we played well where there was a lot of pressure.”

The tie snapped a three-game winning streak, but extended the Cardinals’ run of unbeaten games to four. The Cardinals (3-1-1) host Fairfield Ludlowe on Thursday at 4 p.m.
