Greenwich Dolphin Swimmers Shine In Maryland Meet

GREENWICH, Conn. -- A small, but powerful group of Greenwich YWCA Dolphins Swim Team members traveled this past weekend to the 2015 USA Swimming IM Xtreme Games Invitational at the University of Maryland, College Park.

The USA Swimming Inc.-sponsored meet included more than 75 teams with 1,300 of the Northeast region’s best swimmers ages 9-14 competing over three days in a sequence of distance freestyle, stroke and Individual medley events, where they were awarded points based on time and awards in event placing.

Meghan Lynch, 11; Samantha Ennis, 11: Marcella Winget, 12, and Daphne Edwards, 10, competed for the Dolphins.

Leading the way for the Dolphins was Lynch, who captured her 11-year old class title, ahead of 128 others, with 4,441-points outdistancing rival Mia Abruzzo of the Penn Charter Aquatic Club of Plymouth Meeting, Pa. (4,200 points) and Angelina Harris (3,943) of the Three Village Swim Club of Holtsville, N.Y.

Lynch posted career bests in the 500-yard freestyle at 5:19.13, where she was tenth; 100 butterfly at 1:02.42 for 17th; and the 100 backstroke at 1:03.18, where she was 22nd. Lynch was also second in the 100 breast at 1:06.22 and seventh in the 200 IM at 2:13.45. The placings are for the 11-12 group combined. The 100 back time broke the 1991 team record of Greenwich High and Stanford University All-American Chantal Rawn of 1:03.21.

“When you consider the high level of competition, combined with the demands of racing five rigorous events over 2 1/2 days this was an exceptional meet for Meghan and the others,'' coach Nick Cavataro said.

Ennis was 35th in the 11-year old age group with 2,852 points, reaching the top third with three career best times in the 500 free, 100 butterfly and 100 back.

Winget posted three career best times in the 500 free, 100 butterfly and 100 back. She was 80th among the 170 swimmers in her division.

Competing in her first interstate meet for the Dolphins, Edwards posted five career best times. She was 71st in the field of 100.

“This meet goes a long way to giving the girls and team the exposure and experience needed to compete at the highest level and we are very proud of them individually and as a group,“ Cavataro said.
