GREENWICH, Conn. - Greg Donlic's huge second half lifted the Greenwich High boys basketball team to the 17th annual LaVista Holiday Tournament championship. The 6-foot-5 power forward netted 17 points in the final two quarters and 27 overall as the Cardinals hung on to beat Darien for the tournament title, 50-47.
Greenwich jumped out to a huge 20-8 lead after the first quarter, but Darien stormed back in the second half. The Blue Wave pulled within two points in the fourth quarter thanks to a 22-point effort from Liam Naughton, but Donlic kept finding the basket. Greenwich never surrendered the lead, as Donlic scored all but five of the Cardinals' second-half points.
Alejandro Rodriguez scored 10 of his 13 points in the opening quarter. Greenwich's big center, Sem Kroon, was held to just five points on the evening.
Greenwich (4-1) start the New Year with a three-game homestand. The Cardinals host a tough Trinity Catholic team on Jan. 3 at 7 p.m.
