Greens Farms Blows Lead But Hangs On for OT Win

WESTPORT, Conn. – The Greens Farms Academy boys basketball team let a 15-point lead with six minutes to play slip away against Stamford's King Low Heywood Thomas on Thursday evening. But the Dragons recovered in overtime, as Tremont Waters came up with a huge steal and Hunter Eggers put the finishing touch on a dramatic 73-67 victory for the Westport private school. 

“I just had to remind a young team that we did not lose yet and told them to go play again,” Greens Farms head coach Doug Scott said. “It was a game of momentum swings, and I’m glad we got the last one.”

Sean Obi was a force once again for the Dragons, netting 29 points and pulling down 26 rebounds. Greens Farms showed down the stretch that it has weapons outside of Obi, as Waters, Patrick Ryan (10 points each) and Hunter Eggers (12 points) each had crucial late baskets.

King finally started to slow Obi late in the second half, which is when the Vikings made their comeback. Drew Sawyer led the way for King with 26 points.

King chipped away at Greens Farms’ lead and pulled within three points with 18 seconds to play. Sawyer cut hard to the basket, but fed the ball back out to a wide-open Matt Reggina. He buried the three-pointer to force overtime.

Reggina had a chance to tie the game again on a three-pointer with a minute to play in overtime, but that shot rattled out. Waters stole the ball on the next King possession and Eggers’ putback shot sealed the win for Greens Farms.

“King is a very good three-point shooting team, but I think in overtime we did a very good job of keeping them from taking good shots,” Obi said. “We did a good job to keep our focus and to stay away from fouls.”

Getting to the free throw line also helped the Dragons, as they were 19-for-27 in foul shots. Obi was impressive from the line, going 7-for-10.

Greens Farms (6-3, 4-3 conference) returns to action Tuesday when it travels to Litchfield to take on the Forman School. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
