Fairfield American Plays Vermont In New England Little League Opener

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Fairfield American Little League opens play Friday in the New England Region Tournament in Bristol as it takes on the team from Williston, Vt.

The game starts at 8:15 p.m. in Bristol. Fairfield American is seeking its third New England title in five years.

Westport won the New England title last year, and Connecticut teams have won four of the last six New England titles. American last won in 2012.

Fairfield American will have to stop a Vermont team that went 3-0 in its state tournament and outscored its opponents, 45-3. In the Vermont final, Williston beat Bennington in four innings, 27-0.

Fairfield American swept South Windsor in the best-of-three Connecticut championship series, winning by scores of 10-0 and 12-2.

Fairfield’s other games in the Regional are at 8 p.m. Saturday against Maine; at 8 p.m. Sunday against New Hampshire; and at 4 p.m. Tuesday  against Rhode Island. Fairfield is not scheduled to play Massachusetts.

The top four teams from New England in pool play will go to single elimination Thursday, Aug. 7. The New England final is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 9, at 7 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN. Fairfield’s game against Rhode Island on Tuesday and the semifinals will be televised on NESN.

Fairfield American rolled undefeated through the District 2 tournament, then was pushed in the Division 1 tournament by Norwalk. Fairfield American lost to Norwalk, 8-4, before rebounding with a 10-7 victory to clinch the Division title. American also fought off a challenge from Farmington in the Section 1 title game, winning 2-1 in eight innings. 

American’s roster is Ian Bentley, Vince Camera, Sam Davenport, PJ Egan, Jamie Flink, Trey Hensel, Brian Howell, Brian Kiremidjian, Connor O'Neill, John Reynolds and Jack Steed. Mike Steed is the manager, assisted by Pete Davenport and Keith Reynolds. Most of the team were members of the American team that won the 11-year-old state championship in 2013.
