GREENWICH, Conn. -- A steady rain on Sunday morning that often changed to downpours cut the field of the 25th annual Greenwich Cup Triathlon almost in half from last year. After selling out the event in 2010 with 700 entrants, the storm led to a race of only 354 competitors this year navigating choppy waves and slick roads.
Mitch West, 41, of Wilton, was the overall winner in the elite division, finishing the race in 1:10:51. The wet conditions greatly slowed down the competition -- last year's winner, Shane Meehan, won the race in just over 47 minutes. He finished second in this year's race at a much slower clip of 1:12:50.
Kelly Montgomery, of Wallingford, was the top female finisher with an overall time of 1:16:33. Montgomery finished seventh overall. The top local women's finisher was Rose Shabet, 39, of Darien. Shabet placed second in the women's category and 18th overall with a time of 1:20:37.
Hannah Goodrick, a Darien 15-year-old, won the female 19 & under category. Goodrick placed 85th overall and finished in an impressive 1:32:50. Evan Ciecimirski, 19, of Greenwich was the top male 19 & under finisher with a time of 1:22:23.
The race is an abbreviated triathlon beginning with a half-mile swim in Long Island Sound at Tod's Point in Greenwich. The racers then mount their bikes for a 15-mile ride. The race concludes with a three-mile run, finishing on the beach at Tod's Point.
