The June 30 race will also feature a new bike route that no longer goes through Shippan. In addition, a new warm-up procedure will be enforced before athletes start the race.

Thomas has finished first among amateurs in more than 25 triathlons, including Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island from 2008 to 2011 and the Ironman 70.3 Mossman 2011. Thomas is the owner of Personal Training Professionals in Southport.

The new swim warm-up protocol requires all swimmers - both relay and individuals – to get in a minimum 10 minute warm-up swim before the start of the race. The new procedure is intended to supply a proper warm-up as well as acclimate the athletes to the water temperature.

The second change is a new bike course. This year, athletes will first ride through the City of Stamford, and then make their way North Stamford. They will no longer race through the neighborhood of Shippan Point. Click on the attached PDF to view the new course.

“Shippan is a beautiful area and the neighbors have been extremely supportive of the event since its inception; however, given the growth of the race, we needed to develop the course to hold more athletes,” race director Jon Stellwagen said. “I am very excited for this year’s course. When you consider all three segments - the swim, bike and run - there’s no other course that I can think of that encompasses a beautiful beach, a lively city and beautiful and changing hills as the Stamford KIC IT Triathlon.”

Stellwagen anticipates the race will sell out for its second straight year. Registration is available online.

The Stamford KIC IT Triathlon is an Olympic-distance triathlon that attracts 600 athletes from across the country. The triathlon supports Greenwich-based Kids in Crisis, Connecticut’s only free, round-the-clock agency providing emergency shelter, crisis counseling and community educational programs for children of all ages and families dealing with a wide range of crises – domestic violence, mental health and family problems, substance abuse, economic difficulties and more.
