With the County Championships this weekend, Rocky Point swim coach Terry Lowe knows the odds are stacked against his team. Many of the 1,031 points earned in Rocky Point's second place finish in the Divisional finals on Tuesday will not count toward the championship. But Lowe said he is telling his swimmers not to worry about points and to just focus on fundamentals.
"This is the time to relax and work on the fine stuff," he said. "We work on getting better starts into the pool, streamlining better on our turns, and just trying to get ready mentally for a championship meet."
Despite a stellar finish at the Divisional Championship, some of the Rocky Points swimmers' times did not qualify for the County Championship. Lowe said that even though the team was younger overall than in past years, he has seen his swimmers grow.
"We're really made a great deal of progress," he said. "Our young swimmers in particular have done really, really well. They've really been the backbone of our team."
Lowe said he expects big performances at the County Championships from 8-year-old Alex Walsh in multiple categories, Jaime Miller in the backstroke, and 8-year-old Andrew Berzolla in the freestyle.
The County Championships start at 9 a.m. Saturday at Roxbury Swim Club in Stamford.
