GREENWICH, Conn. The mid-season struggles continued for the Greenwich High boys basketball team Friday. The cold-shooting Cardinals relinquished their grip on first place in the West Division for the first time this season, falling to Westhill on their home court, 61-43.
Greg Donlic led the Cardinals with 18 points, but had a dismal 8-for-16 night from the free-throw line. Greenwich was 16-for-27 as a team from the line.
Westhills Chris Walters returned after a five-game absence due to injury and lit up the Cardinals for 21 points. The Vikings also got one of Greenwichs leading scorers, Alex McMurray (11 points), to foul out.
Donlic and McMurray were the only Cardinals to get into double-digit scoring. Greenwich struggled with layups and shots from the field all evening.
Greenwich (9-4, 7-4 conference) has lost three of its last four games. The Cardinals will have a week to try to get back on track. Greenwich travels to Trumbull on Friday, Feb. 3, for a 7 p.m. game.
