GREENWICH, Conn. The Brunswick baseball team exploded for seven runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back en route to its first Fairchester Athletic Association championship since 2009. The Bruins mauled top-seeded Hopkins of New Haven, 10-5, in a stunning victory.
Brunswick lit up Hopkins ace Jack Lubin, sending 12 batters to the plate in the first inning. Lubin had a perfect 6-0 record until the championship game, knocking him out after just two-thirds of an inning.
Seven Bruins players drove in runs, with Jack Voigt delivering the big blow in the first inning. Brandon Muto, Nick Kono, Brian O'Malley, Justin Cedeno, Chris Hart and Sam Fraser all knocked in runs for Brunswick.
Sophomore Bradley Wilpon battled through four innings in the start, giving up all five of Hopkins' runs. Henry Polak halted Hopkins after that, keeping the top-seeded team from scoring in three innings of relief.
Brunswick will take its league title into the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council tournament, beginning next week.
