Big Victory Sends Fairfield American To Little League World Series

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — The boys on the Fairfield American Little League team routed Maine, 10-0, to win the New England championship on Saturday afternoon. But even bigger: That victory sends them to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa.

Fairfield will play the Mid-Atlantic Region champion (the winner of New Jersey vs. Maryland), on Thursday at 3 p.m. in Williamsport. The game will be broadcast on ESPN. 

In Saturday's win at Breen Field in Bristol, Fairfield American had a big fourth inning, scoring four runs on doubles from Sean O'Neil and Michael Iannazzo.

Ethan Righter earned the win for Fairfield, pitching four-and-one-third innings, allowing no runs and four hits, striking out nine, and walking one. 

Fairfield American had 13 hits, with Matthew Vivona, Ethan, Michael and Sean each collecting multiple hits. Matthew led, going 3-for-4.

The boys are in for a treat when they head home to Fairfield: Saugatuck Sweets on Reef Road will treat the team and coaches to free ice cream.

“Many of these players are regular customers at our shop” the ice cream and candy mecca announced on Facebook. “WIN FAIRFIELD AMERICAN WIN!!!!”

At 18-0, Fairfield American is undefeated in tournament play this season.

Fairfield American is the first program in Connecticut history to appear in three Little League World Series, with previous appearances in 2010 and 2012. 

The last team from Connecticut to win the Little League World Series was from Trumbull back in 1989.
