Bob Rittberger of Garden City Golf Club defeated Danny Balin of Burning Tree in Greenwich in a three-hole aggregate playoff Thursday to win the Met Open championship at Bethpage Black Golf Course on Long Island.
Rittberger and Balin finished 54 holes of stroke play tied at even-par 213. Rittberger won his first Met Open title. Balin settled for second after shooting 68 in the final round to bounce back from a disappointing 76 in the second round.
Rittberger birdied the first hole of the playoff while Balin bogeyed. Both players parred the next hole, and Rittberger's bogey on the final hole opened the door for Balin to extend the match. His birdie attempt from 15 feet missed.
"I birdied the last two holes to finish my [third] round, which is a great finish," said Balin, who competed in the PGA Championship two weeks ago at Whistling Straits. "Hopefully, someday I can play with the best players in the world, but right now I'm still learning and this is a great experience."
