WestConn Expanding In-State Tuition To Students From NY, NJ, Puerto Rico

DANBURY, Conn. — All students from New York and New Jersey will pay in-state tuition starting this fall at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury in an effort to boost enrollment, the Hartford Courant reported.

The plan was approved Thursday by the state Board of Regents for Higher Education, the Courant said.

WestConn, which has 140 empty beds in its dorms, has seen a decline of 700 students in the past six years, the Hartford Courant said.

The state is hoping to attract at least 50 new students from the two states; a pilot program saw New York students increase from 74 last fall to 243 this fall — a 228 percent increase, the Courant said.

The annual tuition is $10,418 for an in-state student and $23,107 for an out-of state student at WestConn, which has two campuses in Danbury.

Students from hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands will also be allowed to enroll at Connecticut State Colleges and Universities at the in-state rates, the Courant said.
