GREENWICH, Conn. -- The building committee for the Greenwich High School Music Instructional Space and Auditorium has halted part of the project while it decides what to do about contaminated soil under the west parking lot and athletic fields. But with the exception of the parking lot, the committee expects that work planned for the summer will be completed.
The committee met Tuesday morning and created an environmental evaluation plan. The first phase of the plan, a report on the history of the site, is due in one week. At that time, testing will continue on the construction site and the fields to determine the extent of contamination, and contaminated soil that has already been excavated will be removed.
The cost of continuing to do soil tests and removing excavated material will exceed the remaining balance of the summer work budget, the district said in a release Tuesday evening. The building committee plans to ask the Board of Estimate and Taxation to schedule a special meeting to approve the release of additional MISA funds so work can be completed before the start of the school year.
Further adjustments to the project may be necessary when more information is obtained through an environmental evaluation of the site.
The high school's athletic fields will remain closed until further notice. School and town officials are creating contingency plans for all programs that use the fields, including the schools physical education and athletic programs and programs run by the town and community groups.
The next building committee meeting is Aug. 16 at 7:30 a.m. at the Havemeyer Building. Updates on environmental testing at the school are available online.
