STRATFORD, Conn. — Some things are more important than winning. And Ryan Duffy, a senior at Stratford High School, proved that last week when he was running in the South-West Conference Championship race in Bethel.

Duffy, 17, was in a position to have the best finish among his teammates when he noticed a runner from another team who was face down on the ground, according to NBC Connecticut.

Duffy stopped to check on the stricken runner, a student from Masuk High in Monroe who was just off the trail and out of the sight of most of the runners, the Stratford Star said.

When the other runner did not respond, Duffy ran back to the start of the race to get help, NBC Connecticut said.

Stratford’s Board of Education honored Duffy, co-captain of the cross country team, for his heroic actions, NBC Connecticut said.

The fallen athlete had suffered a severe case of dehydration but has recovered, the Stratford Star said.
